Bixiga 70 and Kefaya

Celtic Connections Presents: Bixiga 70 and Kefaya

Named for their multicultural home neighbourhood in São Paulo – the numerals being a nod to Fela Kuti’s band, Afrika 70 – Bixiga 70 are a ten-piece, horns-led, instrumental outfit at the leading edge of Afro-Brazilian music. Adapting Kuti’s renegade spirit to their own cross-fertilised traditions, their high-energy, compellingly rhythmic sound mixes jazz, funk, dub and reggae with samba, cumbia and Afrobeat.

Arabic for ‘enough’, Kefaya is both a rallying-cry of the Arab Spring movements, and an international collective led by UK pianist Al MacSween and Italian guitarist Giuliano Modarelli, whose diverse cross-cultural collaborations, drawing on political folk songs and anthems, have been self-styled as “electro/world guerrilla jazz”.
